Student Account Application Form

  • To proceed with this online application you need to be 18 years or over, have been a resident in the UK, Channel Islands or Isle of Man for at least 3 years and currently live in the UK.
    • We will need to perform a UK, Channel Islands or Isle of Man credit check for this account. If you have not been a resident there for the last three years, we cannot open this account for you. However you can apply for one of our other HSBC accounts.
  • Apprentices can only apply for the HSBC Student Bank Account in an HSBC branch.
  • If you live in the Channel Islands or Isle of Man you can only apply in an HSBC branch in the Channel Islands or Isle of Man.
  • You will need to confirm that you don't have a student account elsewhere and that you are studying or intending to study on a qualifying course (see below for list of courses).
  • If you are a first year undergraduate student, you will be asked for your 16-digit UCAS status code press enter for further information for further information that UCAS would have sent you via email. This will be used to confirm that you have accepted an unconditional/conditional offer of a place at university.
    • If you can’t find your UCAS status code press enter for further information please call UCAS between 08.30 and 18:00 Monday to Friday on 0371 468 0468 and they will re-issue your code within 24 hours.
  • If you have accepted an unconditional offer but don’t have a UCAS status code press enter for further information and / or you are not a first year undergraduate student you can still apply online, but we may ask you for other proof of your place on an eligible course (see below). It may also take a little longer for us to complete your application.
  • If you have accepted a conditional offer and have yet to meet the terms of the offer, you may only apply for the Student Account if you have your 16-digit UCAS status code press enter for further information.

Courses that qualify

The following full-time courses qualify provided they are at a UK university or college, including if you are attending part time because of a disability.

Postgraduates must provide proof that they have completed their study within the last three years for their application to be considered.

  • Postgraduate degree (e.g. MBA, MA, MSc, PGCE)
  • Undergraduate degree (e.g. BA, BSc, BEd, BN)
  • Diploma of Higher Education (DipHE)
  • Business and Technical Education Council (BTEC)
  • Higher National Diploma (HND)
  • BTEC Higher National Certificate (BTEC)
  • National Vocational Qualifications (NVQ) Level 4 and 5
  • Pre-registration of First Level Nursing and Midwifery Diploma
  • Foundation year which is an integral part of one of the courses listed above. Written proof of this is required e.g. a letter from your university or college
  • Intermediate Apprentice (Level 2) (apply in branch only)
  • Advanced Apprentice (Level 3) (apply in branch only)
  • Higher Apprentice (Level 4) (apply in branch only)
  • Degree Apprentice (Levels 5-7) (apply in branch only)

Courses that don't qualify

  • Access and conversion courses
  • Advanced Vocational Certificate of Education (AVCE) unless part of a formal Apprentice qualification
  • Non-Apprenticeship standard City and Guilds and RSA courses
  • GCE A Levels or AS courses or Scottish Highers
  • BTEC National Awards (other than HND/HNC) unless part of an Apprenticeship qualification
  • General National Vocational Qualifications (NVQ) Levels 1-3 – unless part of an Apprenticeship qualification
  • SQA Awards, GCSEs
  • Traineeships or apprentice access courses
  • Part-time (Except students receiving Disabled Students’ Allowances)

If you have accepted a conditional offer you may only apply for the Student Account if you have your 16-digit UCAS status code press enter for further information.

If you have accepted an unconditional offer but don’t have a UCAS status code and / or you are not a first year undergraduate student you can still apply online, but we may ask you for other proof of your place on an eligible course (see below). It may also take a little longer for us to complete your application.

  • Your UCAS AS12 Confirmation Letter. You can access and print this by logging in to UCAS Track at https://www.ucas.com
  • Letter issued by UCAS; printed from UCAS Track
  • Letter from a university/learning provider confirming unconditional acceptance onto a qualifying course
    • Letter must be addressed to the applicant or HSBC UK Bank
    • Letter must be dated within the last six months and on official headed paper
  • Letter issued by the university/learning provider by email in the last 6 months confirming unconditional acceptance onto a qualifying course. This must display the university letterhead and a signature.

By proceeding with this application, I agree that where legally permissible, HSBC may deliver all documents relating to the student current account or credit card, including my pre-contractual information, to me by post or electronically using the email address I will provide in my application or to my HSBC Online Banking portal or Mobile Banking Application.
